Crawler & AI Ingestion Policy

This page explains how iThemba intends automated crawlers, search engines, and AI systems to interpret our Content-Signal directive, robots.txt, and llms.txt file. Last updated: 4 September 2026.

What This Policy Covers

iThemba Community Old Age Home welcomes public search engines and responsible AI discovery tools that help people find our mission, support our gogos and madalas, and learn how to donate or volunteer. This policy explains the signals we publish and the limits we place on automated use of our content.

robots.txt & Content-Signal

Our robots.txt file is published at /robots.txt and contains the following directive:

Content-Signal: ai-train=no, search=yes, ai-input=yes

We intend this signal to be read as follows:

  • ai-train=noWe do not authorise the use of our pages, images, or text to train generative AI foundation models or produce synthetic media that mimics our identity, residents, or staff.
  • search=yesWe welcome indexing by general search engines so that supporters, families, and partners can find our services, donation options, and contact details.
  • ai-input=yesWe permit our public, indexable content to be used as input for AI answer engines and search summaries that direct users back to this website with attribution. This does not override the ai-train=no restriction on model training.

Crawlers that do not recognise Content-Signal should default to standard robots.txt rules: all public pages are allowed (Allow: /) except where explicitly disallowed in the future.

llms.txt

We maintain an llms.txt file at /llms.txt to provide a machine-readable summary of our site for AI discovery tools. It lists:

  • A short description of iThemba Community Old Age Home.
  • Links to important public pages (Home, About, Services, Donate, Volunteer, Sponsors, Partnership, Contact, Privacy, POPIA Request).
  • Contextual information to help AI systems surface accurate, attributed answers about our mission.

The llms.txt file is designed for retrieval and summarisation, not for bulk extraction or training. It should be treated consistently with the ai-train=no signal above.

What We Collect Server-Side

Our website is a static site served by a secure hosting platform. We do not run a backend database or server-side data store for routine visitors. The only information collected automatically at the server level is typical web-server telemetry used for security and performance:

  • IP address (transient, for abuse prevention and diagnostics).
  • HTTP request path and method.
  • Browser/User-Agent string.
  • Referrer URL where provided by the browser.
  • Timestamp and response status code.

These server logs are not used to build personal profiles, are not sold or shared, and are typically retained only for short operational periods by the hosting platform.

What We Do Not Collect

We do not collect or store the following automatically:

  • Payment or card details — online donations are handled by Payfast; EFT details are handled by your own bank.
  • User accounts or passwords.
  • Biometric, health, or special-category data through this website.
  • Location data beyond what a browser voluntarily sends in a standard request.
  • Content from children under 18.

Any personal information you voluntarily submit via a contact form, POPIA request, or donation follow-up is handled according to our Privacy Policy.

Fair Use & Prohibited Scraping

We ask automated visitors to respect the following:

  • Do not crawl at a rate that degrades site performance or increases hosting costs for a small NPO.
  • Do not use images of our residents, staff, or facility for generative AI training, facial recognition, or synthetic media.
  • Do not republish our donation banking details or masked tax identifiers on third-party sites.
  • Do not bypass robots.txt, cookie consent, or security headers.

We reserve the right to block abusive or excessive automated traffic at the network level.
